AHA acid in skin care

You have probably heard of acids and their beneficial effects in skin care. In the Gilda Liljeblad series, we have chosen to work with AHA acid products as these acids have the best evidence for their effect and are suitable for several skin conditions and all skin types.

What is AHA acid?

AHA stands for “Alpha Hydroxy Acid” and is a collective name for several different types of acids. What they have in common is that they are extracted from fruits and vegetables or from organic products that have been acidified or fermented. In our products you will find glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and malic acid. This mixture of acids means that you get effects both on the surface and deeper in the skin, which leads to a visible and noticeable improvement in skin quality.

What does AHA acid do?

The most important functions of AHA acids are to bind moisture, exfoliate and contribute to increased cell renewal. The skin becomes noticeably smoother, more elastic and clearer. The peeling effect evens out pigmentation. AHA acid also makes the environment too acidic for the bacteria that cause acne (cutibacterium acnes) to thrive, which gives acne a chance to improve. When you use AHA acid products, you also get a better effect from all other skin care you use because the skin is better able to absorb active ingredients. In short. AHA has many therapeutic properties and improves most skin conditions.

Chemical peel

Peeling with AHA acids works differently than peeling with grains, where it is the grains that polish away the dead skin cells. When we talk about peeling with AHA acids, we are instead talking about so-called chemical peeling. This means that a chemical process occurs where the acids dissolve the bonds between the skin cells so that the old skin disappears and new, healthy skin emerges. The chemical peeling is suitable for all skin conditions, even those with less resistant skin and who may otherwise be sensitive to a grain peeling. The great thing about AHA is that it also adds other positive effects to the skin, as they add moisture and give the skin life and glow.

How do I get started with AHA acid peeling?

AHA acids are active, which means the skin needs to get used to them slowly.

  • Start with a product that contains AHA, don’t start with all of them at once.

    • Do you have sensitive skin that easily turns red? Start with the mildest of our AHA products; Activating AHA Toner.
    • Do you have more resistant skin? Then you can try any of our other AHA products; Activating AHA Serum, Clarifying AHA Cream or Regenerating AHA Mask.
  • Regardless of which product you start with, you should let your skin get used to it slowly. All products, except the AHA mask, can be used every other night for 3 weeks, followed by every night for 3 weeks. Only after the adaptation period can you use the AHA twice a day. Use the AHA mask twice a week for the first 3 weeks. After that, you can increase use to 3 times a week if you wish.
  • Also keep in mind that AHA acids exfoliate the skin and make it more sensitive to the sun. Therefore, use sunscreen daily, at least SPF 30.
  • AHA acids can tingle and sting when applied to the skin. This is natural and a result of the acids working.
  • Your skin may become red the same day, and possibly for a couple of days after use. Light scaling and peeling may also occur after a few days. This is good and is a sign that new skin is being stimulated and cell renewal is increasing.
